A young Cambodian Chinese living in Paris watches a Bharatanatyam
performance for the first time and is “forever enthralled”.
That experience immediately leads him to the doorstep of Madame Vidya du Mandapa, his first dance guru, disciple
of MK Saroja of Chennai, India. Five years of learning and loving the dance won him a chance to take part in the
European Dancers of Indian Dances Festival in Geneva.
Upon Win’s first visit to Chennai, he immediately understood that he was standing on haloed ground; this was
where his thirst for knowledge and understanding of the dance can begin to be quenched! Astutely, he applied
for a two-year ICCR scholarship, and thus began the extension of his margam, or his journey in dance, under M
Selvam at the Muthuswami Pillai Institute.
However, within the year, his path took a turn, and he found himself in the presence of Kalakshetra gurus Professor
CV Chandrasekhar and Shrimati Meena Raman. With these masters, he lived and studied for seven years. It was
also during this time that Win discovered the guru of his very first dance teacher: MK Saroja who became his
mentor and was inspired by her to gather his friends of the art to go forth to share their love and passion for the
dance with the world.
Win Thang has been performing in spaces both sacred and secular in France, Italy, India and Taiwan. This year,
en route to Taiwan, a chance visit to Kuala Lumpur in April brought him to The Temple of Fine Arts. An informal
performance for teachers and students at TFA Kanagasabai struck a chord.
In this month of September, Win shares his love and passion for the dance with Malaysian art lovers at The Temple
of Fine Arts in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Singapore by presenting two different programmes!
