parijata

16th August 2009 PARIJATA PUSHPA HARANAM: V Mathavan & Friends with The Temple of Fine Arts Ochestral Ensemble 7:30 pm @ Shanta Mandhir, 6th Flr The Temple of Fine Arts, Jalan Berhala, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

Let this quartet of singing, storytelling "aiyengars" regale you with the inspiring and humorous story of how Satyabhama, Krishna's consort, is taught a lesson of humility when the Sage Narada twists her desire for the beautiful and fragant parijata flower in Lord Indra's garden. A mixture of songs in Tamil and repartee in English, the quartet's performance is ably accompanied by a coterie of masterful musicians from The Temple of Fine Arts Orchestral Ensemble. V Mathavan, long admired for his stage and performing arts skills is composer and musical director here. He is amusingly joined by K Kandasamy, Dr M Paranjothy and TS Maniam, all who have agreed to pull out their starched cotton veshtis and their not so underused vocal chords to revive the folk style of Kathakalakshepam, now aptly described as Naveena Kathakalakshepam - or the new form of old style story telling!
