18th - 19th July 2009 KALPANA DREAM: Solo sitar recital by Kalpana Paranjothy 7:30 pm @ Auditorium Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Arkib Negara Malaysia, Jalan Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur
Watch out! Here's a dose of youthful dreams! Concocted with calm confidence borne out of a heart that knows its music. Kalpana Paranjothy, disciple of sitar maestro Ustad Usman Khan, weaves her heartsong out of the classics, exploring the profound depths of her imagination in two different programmes. As she does so, she releases the inexplicable emotions that are whispered from her heart to yours.
On the 18th, she takes us into moments of history and romance - the splendorous times of Amir Khusro and the Delhi Sultanate, the romance of Jodha and the young Akbar, and the poignant love of Shah Jahan for his Mumtaz. And she pays homage to the great Tansen, too. She recreates these moments from her imagination through her sitar, her companion, with ragas such as Yaman, Bhageshri, Bhoopeshri and Khamaj.
On the 19th, she is inspired by ragamala paintings, depictions of the soul of each raga on canvas, to reveal her own responses to the creativity of these masters in the ragas Kalavati, Jogeshwari, Kafi and Bhairavi.
Accompanied by award-winning tabla player Prakash Kandasamy who has just returned from a 7 week tour of Germany, Sweden and France with sitar maestro Ustad Usman Khan, she promises an evening of music for the soul, music that is exciting and music that is fun. An experience created out of her love for the sitar and her knowledge of the intricacies of Hindustani music. Be ready to surrender to her unique verve and imagination as a musician.
18th & 19th July 2009 @ Auditorium Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Arkib Negara Malaysia, Jalan Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur.
