Pancatantra Ensemble Theatre presents
THE CROW THE MOLE AND THE TORTOISE
a children’s play adapted from Vishnu Sharma’s Pancatantra Tales

28th & 29th April @ 8.00 pm Shantanand Auditorium, The Temple of Fine Arts

IT’S A HOOMPA HOOMPA JUNGLE OUT THERE!
Short-sighted, sensitive elephants; cute and courageous mice; a bluebird who loves to samba; a crow who wants other animals as friends; a meditating, suspicious mole; and a rapping tortoise who thinks he is superstar Rajnikanth. These are the colourful characters of the children’s play THE CROW, THE MOLE AND THE TORTOISE adapted from Vishnu Sharma’s Pancatantra Tales.

The Pancatantra Tales is a collection of witty, inspiring and thought provoking teaching stories filled with animals that possess human traits and characteristics. The stories have traveled widely throughout Asia and the Middle East for centuries, retold in different forms, often used to reflect the social circumstances of the time. Many stories are wise pointers to conduct and behaviour – as are the tales in THE CROW THE MOLE AND THE TORTOISE.

Adapted to tell the simple frame story of the crow, Shinywings’ desire to make new friends THE CROW, THE MOLE AND THE TORTOISE was first produced in 2005 featuring young children by TFA’s Pancatantra Ensemble Theatre to stimulate drama and theatre among the young using texts and materials of Indian origin.

In this revival of the play, the drama is heightened considerably by the use of upbeat rhythms and vocal effects, new choreography, and stronger characterization by the actors of Pancatantra Ensemble Theatre. The 18-member cast features actors trained in dance and music, of whom nine are 20 years old and above, and the other nine, 11 years and below.

With the ideal of friendship at its core, the play aims to stimulate spontaneity and playfulness, hope and courage, compassion and kindness. It’s a story that will get the children and their adults groovin’ n movin’.
